Finally got it to work using ANT+ so might be worth investing in a dongle if you do have this issue.
The ERG mode seemed to be more consistent as well using ANT+ as well.

I got a Direto XR in December, and the calibration always fails as others on here have reported. I have been in contact with support, tried everything. I have used an iPhone, Mac and Windows.
