Suito setup.. I'm so confused

Postby rg807 » Sat Jan 25, 2020 7:24 pm

Hi,

I have a few questions about setting up the trainer. I also super-strongly suggest that Elite create a set of videos to explain some of the nuances. There are quite a few, and unless you’re using Zwift or TR out of the box, it is not plug and play and it is confusing. I should mention, I'm a 30-year tech guy, I have several software patents, etc., I’m more than technically proficient.

In a nutshell, I pulled the Suito out of the box, mounted my bike, and while, yes, I can pedal it, it's difficult. My FTP is 250, and I can put out 1100 watts in a sprint, so I'm roughly a bad Cat3/Cat 4 equivalent rider. I can only hit 250 on the Elite in an all-out sprint and then I’m going maybe 24mph according to my Garmin. This makes no sense.

I was thinking of not using any training programs (Zwift, TR, etc.) and just loading my own ERG profiles from training files that I have had for years. Before I get to that, though, can the trainer work without using either Elite's program or a 3rd party program such as Zwift? I did install Zwift and used it for a couple of KM's, and it seemed to change the way the trainer rode as in it was much easier to ride and much more like real riding. I also did configure the trainer through the myEtraining app, but I haven’t paid for the subscription. Again, I have plenty of training files, I’m 56 and I’ve been a serious rider for 39 years.

Back to the issue at hand, when I set up the trainer, I installed the Elite app ran setup through the app, then paired it with my Garmin. This does not seem to work no matter how I alter the settings. Please see the pictures I’m attaching. My bicycle is a Colnago C60 running Di2, size 52s. This is an average setup. What is the “gear ratio?” I’ve never seen this and have no idea what it should be. You can also see from the other pictures there are other issues too.

For example, my Garmin will say I'm generating 170 watts at 14mph. Never mind that this isn't possible unless I was going up a hill as 170 watts for me on flat ground is probably 18-19mph. The 170 watts the Garmin says I'm generating feels more like 340! I mean, I am putting out a pretty decent effort to hit 170 and only going 14mph.

I normally use a Stages power meter, which is calibrated, and I know it's correctly calibrated because I've benchmarked it on a Watt Bike. I've tried turning off the sensors on my bike.. nothing. Indicated on the Elite app that I have extra sensors on my bike.. nothing. Indicated on the Elite app that I'm not using sensors on my bike.. nothing. Changed the wheel size to 158 from 2096.. nothing.

I've tried pedaling with the Garmin off and it's still too hard. When I paired the Suito to the Garmin, it asked me to calibrate by riding at 30mph. That would have been like 1500 watts given the way the trainer is functioning.

What do I do? I've looked for help files, etc. and have found nothing.

I should also mention that I’ve been using a trainer for 35 years! In fact, the one I replaced with the Suito is 30 years old and I was assuming the Suito would basically function the same way, i.e., jump on and ride if that’s how I wanted it to function and if I added a program such as Zwift it would then alter the resistance based on the riding profile. Is this not the case?

Thx,

Rob Green
